About Our Coffee

What makes Artist Secret Garden Coffee Roasters unique?

1

Artist Secret Garden Coffee Roasters is a family-operated Tucson business where creativity meets craft. What began as home-roasted coffee shared with guests of the Artist Secret Garden vacation rental has grown into a collection of thoughtfully selected coffees designed to make the daily ritual of brewing feel a little more inspiring.

When is your coffee roasted?

2

We roast our coffee within 1 to 3 weeks before shipment.

Where is your coffee roasted?

3

We roast our coffee in our family’s home kitchen in the Casas Adobes area of Tucson, Arizona. We take pride in offering carefully crafted coffee with a distinctive local story and a deep connection to family, art, and creativity.

Where do your coffee beans come from?

4

We offer coffees from celebrated growing regions worldwide, including Ethiopia’s Uraga Guji Zone, Colombia’s Huila region, and Chiapas, Mexico. Each origin possesses its own characteristic flavors, aromas, body, and acidity..

How do I choose the right coffee?

5

Begin with the flavors you already enjoy:

  • Choose a light roast if you prefer a delicate body, lively acidity, floral aromas, and bright fruit flavors.

  • Choose a medium roast if you enjoy a balanced cup combining natural sweetness, gentle brightness, and a fuller body.

  • Select a darker roast when you prefer deeper, bolder flavors with less noticeable acidity.

Each product page includes tasting notes and additional information to help you find the coffee that best suits your palate.

What is the difference between your Ethiopian, Colombian, and Mexican coffees?

6

Our Ethiopian Uraga Guji light roast is bright and elegant, with notes of lemon, apricot, and jasmine. Our Colombian Huila medium roast offers a creamy balance of chocolate, caramel, and fruit-forward citrus. Our Mexican Chiapas medium roast is smooth, comforting, and balanced, making it an especially approachable everyday coffee.

Are tasting notes added flavors?

7

No. Descriptions such as chocolate, caramel, citrus, apricot, or jasmine refer to naturally occurring qualities within the coffee. These flavors develop through the bean’s variety, growing conditions, processing method, and roast profile; they are not necessarily added ingredients.

Will every bag taste exactly the same?

8

We work to preserve a consistent flavor profile, but coffee is an agricultural product. Natural variations between harvests may produce subtle differences in aroma, sweetness, acidity, or body. These distinctions are part of what makes origin-focused coffee so interesting.

Does light-roast coffee contain more caffeine than dark-roast coffee?

9

The difference is generally small and depends heavily on how the coffee is measured and brewed. Light-roast beans are denser, while dark-roast beans are larger and lighter in weight. When measured by weight, caffeine levels are often quite similar.

Do you offer whole-bean and ground coffee?

10

We offer both whole-bean and ground options (Medium Grind): Ethiopian Uraga Guji (light), Colombian Huila (medium), Mexican Chiapas (medium, Dark, and French), and (Fine Grind) for our in-house ASG Espresso Blend.

Brewing and Freshness

How should I store my coffee?

1

Keep your coffee in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat, moisture, and strong odors. Seal the bag securely after each use. For everyday storage, a cabinet or pantry is usually preferable to the refrigerator.

Should I freeze my coffee?

2

Freezing can help preserve coffee that will not be used for an extended period, but the beans should be stored in a truly airtight container and divided into smaller portions. Repeatedly removing and returning the same container to the freezer may introduce condensation and diminish flavor. Also, freezing coffee beans isn't necessary or recommended if you plan to brew the coffee within the first month after purchase.

How long will my coffee stay fresh?

3

Coffee is safe to use beyond its peak flavor window, but its aromas and more delicate tasting notes naturally fade over time. For the most expressive cup, keep the bag sealed between uses and enjoy it reasonably soon after opening.

What brewing method should I use?

4

Our coffee can be prepared using a variety of methods, including a traditional drip brewer, pour-over, French press, AeroPress, moka pot, or espresso machine. The best method is the one that produces the flavor and experience you enjoy most.

What coffee-to-water ratio do you recommend?

5

A useful starting point is approximately 1 gram of coffee for every 16 grams of water. That equals roughly 2 tablespoons of ground coffee for every 6 fluid ounces of water. You can adjust the ratio to make your coffee stronger or more delicate.

What water temperature is best for brewing?

6

For most brewing methods, use water between approximately 195°F and 205°F. If you do not have a temperature-controlled kettle, bring the water to a boil and let it rest briefly before brewing.

What grind size should I use?

7

The ideal grind depends on your brewing method:

  • Coarse for French press

  • Medium-coarse for many pour-over brewers

  • Medium for traditional drip coffee makers

  • Fine for espresso

  • Extra-fine for Turkish coffee

If your coffee tastes weak or sour, try grinding a little finer. If it tastes excessively bitter or takes too long to brew, try a coarser grind.
